1923 Aerial looking west from 1st Street toward Palma Sola
This is how Bradenton looked in 1923. Manatee Avenue is the long road that terminates at Palma Sola Bay. The courthouse is along the avenue near the center, and the creek is Wares Creek.
Note the cluster of residential and commercial in the lower left corner. This area is a small section of Washington Park, containing some of the Black schools, businesses, and homes as fostered by community leader G.D. Rogers. Combined with Lincoln Heights further to the east on 9th, this was colloquially known as “The Quarters.”
